If one wants to maintain Berlin’s status as a capital of art and stabilize the necessary production conditions for visual artists, studio support and its development must urgently be corrected and supplemented structurally and operationally. For this reason, the studio representative for Berlin presents a white paper.
The Atelierförderung white paper is the result of a six-month process initiated by the Berlin studio representative at the bbk berlin Kulturwerk to discuss the topic of the future of studio promotion together with the relevant players on the production, preservation and use of work spaces, in particular for the visual arts to treat in greater detail.
Those involved in the process include the Senate Department for Culture and Europe, the Society for Urban Development (GSE), the Berliner Immobilien Management GmbH (BIM), artists and their initiatives, the Alliance for Endangered Berlin Studios (AbBA), members of the Berliner Members of various political groups, cooperatives, project developers, planners and site development professionals, as well as representatives of the bbk berlin eV and its Kulturwerk GmbH with its studio office.
The Weissbuch on studio funding offers a constructive contribution to the pertinent and targeted further development of studio and workspace funding and the development of studio locations in Berlin. The objectives, target groups, needs, instruments and actors presented in this documentation are the result of many years of experience in the immediate implementation of studio projects, a representation of the needs directly from the scene and the result of a constructive dialogue between the involved stakeholders.
The White Paper sees itself as an urgent action recommendation to politics and administration in Berlin for the necessary studio and workspace funding from now on.
Dr. Martin Schwegmann
Studio representative for Berlin and head of the studio office in the Kulturwerk of the bbk berlin
